Deja Vu - Never Surrender

The Deja Vu blogfest, hosted by DL Hammons.

Here's one of my first ten posts ever, from 4/6/10.

That's today's motto: Never surrender, never give up.

Some of you may recognize it from Galaxy Quest. I have to say, it remains a favorite - the movie and the quote.

Sometimes we look at other people and think they have it easier than us. That perception is probably not true. In most cases there's probably a lot of work and effort that went into achieving whatever it is of that person's being coveted.

This much is certainly true. If you give up, you will never achieve it yourself.

Frustration is part of the game no matter the goal. Obstacles and challenges are part of any road. They're just bumps and potholes. Nothing to let yourself get intimidated over. Not good enough reasons to stop. Not if you have passion and drive.

If you look past the potholes and ignore them, there's still a lot of road and asphalt. There's grass and trees and an endless sky. At some point the road crew will come by and fix the road. It will smooth out and you'll forget about the potholes for awhile. When they show up again, as they always do, just steer around them or pick an alternative route. But don't quit. There's people honking behind you.

Yeah, it's a metaphor. Take it how you wish. Keep your eyes on the road, the sky and the future road crew. Most importantly: Never surrender, never give up. As Jason Nesmith says.

Sir Alexander Dane: You're just going to have to figure out what it wants. What is its motivation?
Jason Nesmith: It's a rock monster. It doesn't have motivation.
Sir Alexander Dane: See, that's your problem, Jason. You were never serious about the craft.

Hello Mary:
Sometimes life just seems full of potholes and one is helpless to see anything else, but you are so right that there is always a way around, an alternative, a future which is free from potholes. One just has to keep looking ahead and have the belief that obstacles can and will be overcome!

Galaxy Quest is awesome!
And those people behind you don't just honk - they run you over.

This movie ruled. I loved Justin Long and his friends in it too. But yes, Alan Rickman was absolutely stunning. Glad you brought this post back.

I enjoyed this movie when it came out- lots of funny mixed with mild drama.

Great post and full of truth. People often look at those who are successful and say "they are just lucky that way," when in reality the "lucky" have just found something they are passionate enough about to not give up.

I've been on the road of nothing but potholes, Jane & Lance. Sometimes we have to find new roads.

Now I want to watch Galaxy Quest, Alex. Love this movie.

I like Alan Rickman, Christa. He was great in Senese & Sensibility

Summer, there is a lot of great entertainment in Galaxy Quest

vanyelmoon, most times that is the case. A few are born with insane talent, but they still need the drive to get down the road

What a great post to share for the "do over" fest. I love the metaphor.

Heading over to see the eclipse photos now! :)

Hi,

Never truer words written... As writers/authors we know the road is rocky, black-holes lurking waiting to drag us down into the depths of despair, yet we can't give up because if we do we'll never know whether we could have made it through to a golden future. ;)

Hm, I may have to re-watch Galaxy Quest. I only remember the goofy parts (so, you know, most of it :P).

Never surrender, never give up, and always believe you can succeed. Having confidence counts for a lot. :)

Snape, Ripley, and a felon Santa Claus at their very best. I really did love that movie. Excellent humor.

I've not seen Galaxy Quest, but if those jumpsuits say anything about the show, I must make it a priority.

I needed this dose of inspiration, a born pessimist, tend to fall into the potholes and need to be lifted up very time. Sounds like an interesting movie. A truly wonderful post.

It's my tenacity speaking, Julie.

Exactly, L. Diane.

Retta, I think I originally wrote that post with you & some others in mind. :)

I want to watch it again, too, Christine. Wish I had the time. Next week sometime. Maybe. Probably not.

Francine, I've heard the same advice from many published writers.

I should have saved it for January's insecure writers, Denise, Eagle, Donna, Rek, Sue

Confidence does count for a lot, Lindsay. It's what keeps us going.

You must see it, Julie. It's a fabulous movie.

They were at their best in this movie, Beer.

Hope you like the photos, Julie.

Maybe we should have a Galaxy Quest Fest, Tara & Michael :) Hmmm.

Thanks for this repost! It's quite inspiring! I actually use that quote pretty often, but I've never seen the movie! :P

You're right to post this as one of your favorites. Never giving up is a great thing to write about and since it's so much a part of writers' lives, you can't write about it enough.

Happy Holidays. And here's to more writing in 2012.

Glad to see you have joined in the Insecure Writers' Blog Hop.

What would be the joy in getting things accomplished if they are too easy? The challenge is part of what makes it fun (I say this today but maybe not two weeks ago). Great post.

Lydia Kang said...

I adore that quote!

Thanks so much for joining the Blogfest!

Helen Ginger said...

So true! If you give up, you lose, not just what you may have attained, but the chance of getting it all.

Love the pic.

Nicki Elson said...

I'm with Tonja - the potholes make it more fun! Also with Alex - those cars'll run us right over if we don't get moving.

A fun and inspiring post! Complete w/ a movie I must add to my to-be-watched list. :)

Anyone who hasn't seen Galaxy Quest yet...run, don't walk to the video store and rent it RIGHT NOW! Awesome movie! And although the quote starts off as a cliche at the beginning of the movie, it proves to be relevant regardless of the circumstances. Of course its a lot harder than tossing out a catch phrase, but its the simplicity of it that rings true!

Thank you for re-posting this today! Excellent choice! :)

Great quote from a great movie. My other favorite line is when Teb adds, "And it exploded" right after they digitize the pig-lizard.

I've never seen Galaxy Quest. I love your analogy!

BECKY said...

Great post. We writers definitely need reinforcement about not giving up!

Wonderful post! I keep telling my wife writing is the one thing I love enough that I can see it through to high success.

Glad I found your blog, as my Deja Vu post from yesterday is about some strange lights I saw in the middle of New Mexico.

Fabulous! I always try to keep that message in mind. My favorite quote ever: "Never quit!" by Winston Churchill

I like your metaphor. It's fitting.

Love the quote. :-)

It's funny to me how people perceive that 'others' have it 'easier.' Who are these others with their problem-free lives? :)

I'm not going to give up - instead I'll try to get good suspension so the potholes don't bother me.

I love "Galaxy Quest" - as well as that great motto, it shows how you can be better than you thought you could be, and with a great deal of laughs :).

This is very true though. Sometimes you will get knocked about, but you just have to keep on trying. Thanks for reposting.
