NASA's Journey Above Vesta
Asteroid Vesta as seen by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft.
In case you haven't seen yet, here's what scientists saw of the asteroid passing so close by this week -- this is a different asteroid. So, yes, asteroidmania on Wistful Nebulae today:

Hello Mary:
Who could not be both intrigued and fascinated with this video clip of Vesta about which we had heard a great deal but, previously, knew very little?
Very cool!
Hi Mary,
I dare say it slipped past pretty much unnoticed by most people. Must say, I do wonder where peoples' heads are sometimes! ;)

The video is wild. It almost doesn't look real.
Colossal walnut hurtles through space.
(My reaction: Interesting.)
Scary its passing closer to Earth than our moon's orbit. But fascinating at the same time.
Actually, I was thinking of Asteroid 2005 YU 55 that just passed so close.
The videos are fascinating...the first one has an eerie feel to it....scary and mind boggling how we go on, blissfully unaware that one of these big rocks could signal the end of all that we have built.
Interesting. There are objects in the sky that close to earth? Perhaps that is why there are so many more natural disasters in the last couple years; asteroids and comets and such messing with the orbit. Or something.
Curious.
I'm heading to Jon Mac's now. Have a good weekend Mary.

Thanks for posting the videos!
I thought it looked like a walnut too- perhaps it's trickery! ;) But seriously, it's very cool what they can see from Hubble.
Lots of cool stuf out in space. I took a couple of courses in astrophysics when I was a student long time ago >:)
Cold As Heaven
This is sooo awesome! I can't wait to show my brother these videos.
Oh and thank you sooo much for your comment yesterday. You made my day. I was so worried about that post LOL!
I'm on the NASA email list so I get to see many of these videos.
Technology is amazing when it allows us to see what couldn't be seen before.
Thanks for sharing.
I hated Battle for Los Angeles. But, I'm off to see what you thought of it.
Wow this is incredible. Thanks so much for sharing. Have you ever seen the movie Gattica? That's one of the first things that comes to my mind when I think about NASA and space, and it's awesome. :)

Pretty fascinating stuff for sure. Hopefully the future administrations will divert some of the money spent on war to exploring more of space.

Those are both very cool videos. What a strange little world Vesta is. It looks like there is a "happy face" at its south pole.
Thanks for posting the videos! Interesting!
Wow! Seems so interesting, thank you!
