Outer Space! Really?

Syfy announced plans for a new drama set in ... OUTER SPACE! Seriously? The Syfy channel is going to make a science ficiion show? I'm speechless, and trying not to get my hopes up too much.

As reported on Gateworld:

Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who worked on Star Trek: DS9 before shepharding Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda, is developing a currently untitled series from Universal Cable Productions, set on the Starship Defender.  “After decades of war, the newly formed Unity Democracy orders a volatile mix of humans and trans-humans to lead the Starship Defender on an expedition in search of lost worlds requiring law and order,” says Syfy.

I'm wondering what they mean by transhumans. Ghosts in space? Animal-human hybrids?

At any rate, just because they're thinking about doing this show doesn't mean it'll ever even make it to the pilot phase. So, I'll try and forget about it until it happens, and hope someone creates a science fiction internet channel with plenty of spaceships and aliens and planets and stars.

With that said, they're also developing two new dramas that seem to use ghosts. Um, Syfy, you don't need any more ghosts on your channel.

I always go to the Syfy channel hopeful that something with aliens and spaceships - and a great story line - will be on. It never, ever happens. Transhumans - short for transgender or transformer?

A science fiction show on SyFy? Did hell freeze over?
A writer from DS9 gives me hope even as the channel does not.

LOL! methinks you're not too thrilled w/the SF channel... :D They do have a lot of ghosts, you're right. Here's hoping your trans-humans are nonghostly. And it gets made. <3

Psssh, next thing you're going to tell me, The Learning Channel is actually going to create a show where the viewer learns something.

I am shocked. SHOCKED! Tonja, Transhumans these days typically refers to cybernetically-enhanced humans. Sort of like cyborgs, but with more wifi.

I love the ghosts...but I wants regular 'ol science fiction too! Maybe bring back Flash Gordon or something.

Yeah... Syfy kinda went south when they decided to remove the actual Science and Fiction from their name. Whose brilliant plan was that? The new series sounds like it'll be awesome if it comes to be!

Transhumans? Yes that does offer some interesting concepts for discussion. Hubby says they might be humans with augmentations like computer enhanced brains, telescopic vision, cybernetic limbs. I think they're probably human mutants that haven't quite developed into their fully fledged forms. I hope if the TV programmes do air that they aren't a disappointment.

BTW we don't get the Syfy channel.

This sounds really cool. And what's the deal with ghosts in space? Last I checked ghosts weren't Sci-fi. I haven't encountered an awesome space show since Babylon 5. :)

I loved DS9! I hope they don't screw it up.

It used to be I could always count on the SyFy channel for some good ol'... well... sci fi!

Lately I started watching Grimm for my imagination fix. It's been surprisingly entertaining. Different. A fun twist on the old Grimm's fairy tales. My favorite character is actually the turns-into-a-wolf sidekick, who is reluctantly dragged along on cases. Nothing deep, but fun entertainment.

It'll do til that new outer space show comes on, LOL!

I've pretty much given up on SyFy so I won't hold my breath either, but it would be nice to see some good space adventures again.

I'm a little tired tonight, but is that sarcasm I hear in this post and so many of the comments. Shame on you all for expecting science fiction on SyFy

I was just reading about a science fiction show that's going to be going into production on AMC soon too, although I can't remember if it was space opera or not. Still, it's good to dream.

Or freaky creatures either. Sounds like Syfy needs programming with good sci-fi concepts & writing. You should apply, Mary!

Syfy lost it's way when it removed its i chromosome and became y. I miss spaceships and aliens on tv. I miss the days of X-Files, Star Trek, Andromeda. I thought it was a new revolution with the new BSG, but sadly the let the realm of science fiction go along with the show.

I gave up on TV a long time ago. Now, if something makes it past 2 seasons I'll rent it from netflix and buy it if it's good enough to watch over and over again.

Outer space? That's a huge subject to cover. I don't think I've ever watched SyFy channel and I don't suppose this will be a huge incentive for me to start.

50/50 that it will make the air. And less than that, that it will be any good. I want so badly for the SciFi channel to be great.

Hm, it's been at least five years since I even flipped to the SciFi Channel (I refuse to write it SyFy :P). I think that's about the time Stargate went off the air. Oh, I did try the pilot of the new (and already gone) Stargate, but that one didn't grab me. It'd be interesting to have some space adventures once again....
